1000 pillowcases and still going strong…

Ruth Ann’s Story

A chance meeting, in June of 2009, with a former co-worker from the mid 1990′s led to the renewal of a hobby I had put aside due to work.  Having been a dressmaker for many years, Carol remembered my sewing background and asked me if I still sewed and would I be interested in joining her new chapter she was forming for ConKerr.

As a cancer survivor, I was extremely interested and my sewing skills came back to life!! My poor old machine burned out the motor on 3rd pillowcase, so a new one was bought. A serger soon followed and I was in business.

As of the first week in April of this year, I passed a milestone and completed my 1,000th pillowcase. I have to add that upon retirement on January 27th, 2012, my co-workers got together and created a huge basket with sewing supplies and enough fabric to make 40 pillowcases!! Those were completed for February delivery. They knew of my committment towards ConKerr and gave me the “bestest” gift ever!! Each pillowcase/cuff was different and some had chosen fabric per their personality.

I look forward to continuing creating pillowcases for these beautiful children and can only hope that one day we won’t need to make these anymore. But until that day comes, I will continue to be a part of ConKerr and the “Miles of Smiles” family.

Thank you Ruth Ann for your dedication to ConKerr!

30,000 Pillowcase Delivered

by ConKerr TampaBay on April 7, 2012

Our chapter has reached another milestone! WOW! 30,000 pillowcases (smiles) delivered since June 2009!! Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers who give countless hours: coordinating, cutting fabric, sewing, ironing, folding, bagging and delivering!! Thank you!!

This month I wanted to share a little bit about the “red high top sneaker”. Ryan Kerr, the inspiration behind ConKerr Cancer, lived his life with grace, kindness and a remarkable love for life. His size 16 red high tops have become a symbol of his light in the world which you reflect through your loving work for ConKerr Kids. Below, Mary, one of our “core group” bought a pair of red high tops to wear to ConKerr event. Way to go Mary!
